Kids Taco Night - A New Tradition

In an ongoing effort to involve kids in the kitchen, I'm always looking for ways to make cooking and food preparation fun. Even better is the dream of combining cooking fun with a purpose. In my quest, I've stumbled upon the concept of Taco Night. This is not a new or original idea, but it's so good I have to spread the word.

Taco Night is a special night that can happen once every 3 months, once a month, or once a week, depending on your family's level of organization, enthusiasm, and energy. It's for the kids and by the kids. Make it a new tradition that your kids and their friends will all look forward to. Sounds good? Then read on.

Once a month Taco Night is very workable. You can make it a standing date, like the last Friday night of every month. Have your children invite their friends; as many as you feel comfortable with. In the summer the party can move outside, which is good because tacos are messy. Inside or out, remember the family dog makes a good vacuum.

What's on the menu? Tacos, of course, and anything you want that works with the taco theme. If the kids are young, keep it simple. As they grow and their cooking skills are more polished, they can experiment with gourmet tacos or fancy side dishes if they want. To help with organizing the whole thing, have the children make a Taco Night Shopping List on the computer that they can copy off the week before each party. That way they can quickly look over the list to see what's on hand and what needs to be purchased. Keep all recipes together in a specific spot for easy access when it's time for them to start cooking.

What good can come from Taco Night? Your kids will learn to cook tacos really well! Besides that, it becomes a tradition and a memory maker marking each year. Remember the time Jason forgot to get the taco shells and he tried to make mini tacos with the tortilla chips? Or how about that time Jenna liked Kendall and she put a piece of paper with her phone number in his taco and he accidentally ate it? Just watch Taco Night evolve as they grow up; each year taking on a different flavor. The siblings will get to mix with different ages on a regular basis, and also work on their social skills without even knowing it. Another benefit is the chance for kids to run the show which can help their self-confidence as they get better and better at it. Last but not least, as the number of attendees grows, your kids can practice their delegation skills. Of course, they'll probably delegate the dishes to you, but it's worth it.
